  17. to the Kermit people (my problem with 
  18. dttool is only when I dial out to my isp,
  19. for which Kermit is how I dial out).

  21. Just now, as I post this, I decided to
  22. add the solaris group, because if anyone
  23. knows the ins and outs of dttool,
  24. they do.

  26. Just so you know, shelltool is what I've
  27. been using ever since I started using
  28. sun gui's, way back when, and for
  29. dialing out into an isp (first netcom
  30. (shell), then panix (shell)), it's worked
  31. just fine -- well, at least I could read
  32. the screen, and use vi, trn, emacs, etc.

  37. By the way, my problem is *urgent* -- I can't
  38. switch over to the blade100, with its just-installed
  39. solaris 9, until I can successfully dttool
  40. (or xtool or whatever, with sun having finally
  41. swiped suntool).

  44. Now, here's what I've prepared to post to
  45. the kermit newsgroup:

  52. On my (said to be "behind-the-times") sparcstation-5,
  53. I'm running Solaris 7, which still supports Sun's
  54. ancient original terminal-emulator, "shelltool".  It's
  55. always worked just fine for me.

  57. I just got a sunblade100, and have installed on it
  58. the just-released Solaris 9.  Nice OS, lots of
  59. nifty features, I'm told.
  60.  
  61. However, one big problem: no more support
  62. for shelltool, which, after years of threats
  63. >from  Sun, doesn't exist on 9.  (I'm now wearing
  64. a black armband!)
  65.  
  66. (I've read, in comp.unix.solaris, that you can't (either
  67. easily, or at all), move the solaris-7 (or 8) shelltool
  68. executable to 9 and have it work, because Sun has also
  69. removed various other things that are needed for
  70. shelltool to run.)

  72. Anyway, it doesn't work too well; I think the
  73. immediate problems can be boiled down to solving
  74. this one problem:

  76. (1) You say "ls -ls", and the screen (at my "shell
  77. account" at the other end, to which I'm dialing into via
  78. kermit) fills with, uh, ls-lines.
  79.  
  80. Now do "vi some-file" -- all those ls-lines are still
  81. there, just overlaid by the "black" chars in some-file.
  82.  
  83. You hit ^L -- nothing happens.
  84.  
  85. You exit or ^Z vi, and try ^L again; still nothing.
  86.  
  87. You type the cmd "clear"; nothing happens.

  91. (Could I 'research" this myself?  Doubtful --
  92. I've *never* yet been able to comprehend the
  93. ins and outs of serial communications, so much
  94. so that even after a few years of using kermit
  95. for my isp connection, I still get neither color
  96. nor eg french accents.  Maybe you have a cookbook
  97. way to enable that stuff, *without* my having to
  98. understand what's behind it?)

  101. (Oh -- all those problems I was having with
  102. Panix, lines dropping after 30 seconds, etc --
  103. after two years of *loud denials*, it turned
  104. out to be *their* problem (telco), which I
  105. have worked-around by simply dialing into 718
  106. or 212 (phone company tells me that with my
  107. "plan", the cost is identical to dialing 914;
  108. is, is a "local" call.   (Why did I wait so
  109. long to try 212 or 718?  Stupidity, I guess,
  110. but aided by their continuing protestations
  111. that it was all my fault, which I believed --
  112. just more evidence of stupidity!))

  120. to blade (has solaris 9) once I can successfully
  121. dial into the isp (successfully).
